A request from a long-established institution for one of the most traditional toys around has promoted a natural and obvious combination.

Coutts has taken delivery of a Montgomery Hall from The Dolls House Emporium for its showpiece Christmas Window display at its London headquarters at 440 Strand.

It will be auctioned after Christmas to raise money for the Kids Company charity, which provides practical, educational and emotional help for vulnerable inner city youngsters.

From its foundation over 300 years ago, right up to the modern day Coutts & Co has a rich history of banking excellence.

The Dolls House Emporium, a little younger at just over 30 years vintage, has a similarly formidable reputation in its field and is the world market leader in what it does.

The Derbyshire-based firm donated one of its characteristic town house models, Montgomery Hall, with a basement for the display.

The bank was keen to promote a series of traditional toys and is also featuring a rocking horse and large stuffed toy elephant in its window, directly opposite Charing Cross underground station.

Coutts puts together one of the West End’s most popular festive window displays in a thoroughfare used by millions of visitors each Christmas.

If you would like to make a festive donation to help the Kids Company charity, you can text 70700 to make a £5 donation.

Super supernatural effects by haunted dolls’ house winner

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

It’s weird, it’s wacky, it’s a little bit scary … it’s the winner of the latest Dolls House Emporium competition!

Debby Meister emerged victorious with her Haunted Dollhouse, created from what was originally a 3d wall hanging.

She said: “This house is a bit weirder than some haunted houses because it’s not a standard scale.

“It’s almost one inch but not quite. Boy was it a challenge to find things that would fit it correctly… so many of the items are made by artisans. It’s the first dollhouse I’ve ever completed.”

The brief was to send in some photos of weird, wacky, unusual or fun houses.

Debby, (62), from Greensboro in North Carolina, who won £200 in Dolls House Emporium gift vouchers, explains: “I’ve always loved small things and I really love everything related to Halloween.

“I wanted a dollhouse my whole life but it wasn’t until 1997 when we moved from Midtown Manhattan (a really small apartment) to Greensboro NC (a nice size house), that I was able to have a place to put a dollhouse.

“The next step was finding a dollhouse that would work for a haunted house and one with really nice details. This house wasn’t meant as a dollhouse but as a wall sculpture.”

She hardly changed the house from the original but let her imagination run riot on the rooms inside.

“At the time I didn’t realize it wasn’t one inch scale and had several items, like a kitchen sink that wouldn’t fit in the rooms… I panicked a bit!

Many of the accessory miniatures were purchased over the years but a few are very special to her.

“There’s a small silver hour glass on one of the shelves that came from the charm bracelet I had as a kid… from around 1958.

“One of the bottles has a carved coral rose as the stopper that was used by my father as a tie tack in the 60s. A blue dogs head was one of my father’s tie tacks.

“There’s a small sterling silver unicorn on the fireplace that I purchased on a trip to London from a store in Burlington Arcade in the early 90s.

“The majority of the items were purchased in the past decade on eBay or custom made by artists, when I couldn’t find anything that fit the bill.”

The bed and the ghost under the bed, the weather vane, the two goblins working in the house and the green slime monster in the basement were made by Miriam Kallies, from Germany. The witch dancing with the ghost and the scarecrow were bought on eBay, both made by Pat Benedict, of Woopitydoo Dolls. The African Grey Parrot was made by Kerri Pajutee from a photo of Debra’s own pet.

The whole display is kept virtually dust free in custom-built case made by her good friend Dan Stiles.
